Two distortions, one knob between them

Most distortion plug-ins make you choose: warm and musical, or harsh and modern. The Grind runs both engines at once and puts a knob between them. Park it where the sound is true. Free, so all it costs you is the argument.

The warm one

Tube emulation. Sounds gorgeous, rounds everything off, and politely refuses to get ugly no matter how hard you crank it. So you stack a second plug-in on top for the nasty part — and now you have two GUIs, two gain stages to match by ear, and a preset you can never quite recreate.

The broken one

A clipper or a bitcrusher. Gets ugly instantly, which is the point, and loses the entire low end on the way there. So you EQ the body back in afterward, and by the time it has any weight again it is not the sound you reached for.

You know the routine. The sound you actually want lives somewhere in between — a fat, warm body with a nasty edge sitting on top of the transients — and neither shelf can get there on its own. That is not a preset problem. It is a one-knob-short problem.

The Move

Set the input first

Get the meter reading healthy before you touch anything else. Distortion reacts to level, so this knob matters more here than on almost any other plug-in you own.

Start on the tube side

Pull Blend all the way to Tube. Bring Drive up until it sounds good. Body fattens it. That is your floor.

Sweep toward digital

Ease Blend right and listen to what the digital engine does to the top of the sound. Somewhere along that sweep is the point where both are true at once. Park it.

Match the level, then decide

Bring Output back down until it is as loud as bypass, and A/B with Activate. Louder always sounds better for about ten seconds. Judge it at the same volume.

Input up, output down. That pair is the real drive control.

Both engines respond to how hard the signal hits them. Push Input and pull Output and you get more dirt at the same loudness — which is the only honest way to compare a setting against the clean track. The Drive knobs shape the character. This pair decides how much of it you get.

Tube

The polite one. Drive sets how hard it is pushed; Body leans it from tight preamp to full power-amp. It compresses as it distorts, so it gets loud without sounding broken. Its own three-band tone stack, ±12 dB.

Master

Blend crossfades the engines. Gate silences the floor between notes. Mix folds the clean signal back underneath. Input and Output are the gain stage — see above.

Digital

The impolite one. Drive is hard clipping, more aggressive than the tube side; Crush degrades resolution until the signal rattles. Same three-band stack, so you can shape each path before they ever share a wire.

Parallel Is Not A Trick.
It Is The Point.

Both engines are always running. Blend decides how much of each you hear. Then Mix decides how much of the whole thing you hear against the clean track — and pulling it below 100% is, on drums and vocals, often the only way to use heavy settings at all. You keep the harmonics and the aggression, and the clean transient stays on top where it belongs.

The Gate is off until you ask. Distortion multiplies whatever noise was already in the signal, so when the hiss between notes starts to show, bring the threshold up until it goes quiet, then back off if your tails get clipped. Nothing is gated by default.
