Delay in both directions

Two delay engines, one forward and one reverse, running at once and feeding each other. Repeats that swell up into the beat instead of trailing off after it. Blend between them, chain them, cross them — and you are somewhere a straight stereo delay cannot get to. Read it forward or backward, it is still Palindrome. Hence the name.

Print it

Bounce the part. Reverse the file. Re-import it. Nudge it until the swell lands on the beat. Decide you wanted a longer tail, and do the whole thing again. You cannot play it, only prepare it — and it will never move with the track.

RECIPE_B

The "reverse" preset

Somewhere on a multi-FX there is a patch called REVERSE. It is a one-shot swell with no forward tail, no feedback worth the name, and no way to make the two directions talk to each other. It sounds like a preset because it is one.

What you actually want is a delay that reads both ways at once: a forward tail and a backward pre-echo on the same note, live, with a knob between them you can ride while you play. That is a different instrument, not a preset.

Get a plain repeat first

Blend all the way to Forward. Set Time L and Time R, or switch on Sync and pick divisions. Bring Feedback up until the repeats last as long as you want. Boring on purpose. This is the floor.

Sweep toward reverse

Ease Blend right and listen. The repeats stop trailing the note and start arriving ahead of it. Around the middle, both are happening at once. Park it where the part feels balanced.

Add Cross FB. A little.

Now the forward repeats feed the reverse engine and the reverse repeats feed back into the forward one. A single note flips direction as it decays. A little goes a long way; the knob stops before it wrecks the sound.

Try it in series

Switch Routing to F>R or R>F and one engine becomes the other's input. An echo that reverses, then reverses again. This is where it stops behaving like any delay you have used before.

Everything happens in the signal path, in real time. Automate Blend, ride it by hand, change your mind about the delay time mid-take. There is no reversed file on disk because there never needs to be one. It is an effect you play, not a bounce you schedule.

Forward

Time L and Time R, independent. Feedback. Drive, which is saturation on this engine's repeats only. Sync to the host across seventeen divisions. Ping-pong, so the repeats bounce between channels.

Master

Routing: Parallel, or Series either way round. Cross FB. Low and High Cut so the tails do not cloud into mud. Blend and Mix. Rate and Depth for modulation, and Tape, which adds wow and flutter to both engines from one shared source.

Reverse

The same controls as Forward, pointed the other way. Its own two times, its own feedback, its own drive, its own ping-pong. Four fully independent delay times across the two engines.

Reverse Delay Is A
Rhythmic Effect.

A reversed segment plays back over its own length, so the swell lands one segment before the note that made it. That means the Time knob on the reverse engine is not how long the echo is. It is where the swell lands. Set it to a division and the pre-echoes fall on the grid; set it by ear and they fall wherever you put them.

Everything else stays out of the way until asked. Drive is per engine, so the repeats darken and thicken on every pass only if you push it. Tape drifts both engines together like they were on the same worn transport, and its depth defaults to zero. Nothing modulates until you say so.

Straight Talk

  • ▸ Blend does nothing in series. In Parallel it balances the two engines. In either series routing one engine is feeding the other, so there is nothing to balance and the knob does not apply. That is by design, not a bug you found.
  • ▸ Reverse Time is where the swell lands. Not how long the echo is. If the pre-echoes feel off the grid, that knob is the one to move.
  • ▸ Tape and modulation are off until you ask. Depth defaults to zero. If the repeats are wandering and you did not want them to, check that first.
  • ▸ Windows only. VST3, plus a standalone app. No AU, no CLAP, no Mac build. Any sample rate. Zero added latency.
