Aurit

Perfect pitch is a gift.
Relative pitch is a skill.

Train the ear behind the hands

Intervals, chord quality and whole progressions — by ear, in your browser, for free. It keeps track of what you miss and drills that, so you spend your time at the edge of what you can hear instead of in the middle of what you already can.

Ten Years In.
Still Guessing At The Bridge.

// the old way

OPTION_A

The doorbell app

Block chords on a sine wave, dealt at random. It quizzes you evenly on the twelve intervals, so you spend a third of every session confirming you can still hear an octave. Nothing in it sounds like music, so nothing you learn carries over to any.

OPTION_B

"Just play more"

The advice everyone gives. It works, slowly, and it never tells you what you are bad at. You recognise the sound of a borrowed chord and still cannot name it, so you cannot carry it to the next song. Ten years in, you are still guessing at the bridge.

Relative pitch is a skill, and skills get built at the edge. The drill has to know where your edge is, and it has to sound enough like music that what you learn is still there when the band starts.

Three Drills, One Ear

// hear it, name it, get told, go again

MODE_01

Intervals

Hear two notes, name the distance. All twelve, minor second to octave, from a moving root so you are hearing the interval and not memorising a pitch.

MODE_02

Chord Quality

Hear one chord, name its colour. Major, minor, diminished, augmented, and the four sevenths. The ones that actually turn up in songs.

MODE_03

Progressions

Hear a progression, name each chord's degree. It climbs tier by tier: diatonic triads, then secondary dominants, borrowed chords, modal interchange. Voice-led, from real piano samples. Music, not block-chord doorbells.

MISS

It hunts your weak spots.

The picker tracks the degrees you get wrong and biases the next round toward them. You drill what you are bad at, not what you have already got. Which is the whole difference between practice and a quiz.

Straight Talk

  • ▸ Use headphones. Laptop speakers lose the low end and blur the middle, and half the sevenths live in the part you cannot hear.
  • ▸ It is an experiment. It works, it is used daily, and it is not finished. Things will move. If a drill feels off, say so; that is what the contact link is for.
  • ▸ Perfect pitch is real. This is not that. Aurit trains relative pitch, the thing you can actually acquire as an adult. It will not teach you to name a note from silence. It will teach you to hear where the chord is going.
